 How Healthy is Your Community? Kane Health Counts Will Tell You
New health data portal will go live November 18th
We know where we live does matter to our health. Do you how healthy the residents are in your community? Well, now we can answer that question. The new KaneHealthCounts.org website is intended to do just that. It is a storehouse of health data, demographic information, resources, best practices and reports that provide an unbiased look at life in Kane County.
For example, did you know that about 40,000 residents of Kane County, about 7.5%, have diabetes? You'll find how this information drives our Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), and as well as sections on where agencies can apply for grant funding, and "promising practices" gathered from across the country.
The user-friendly website is intended to be used by everyone from private citizens to research professionals, business organizations and policy makers. With the Kane Health Counts website, the goal is to strengthen and build healthier communities through state-of-the-art web-based assessment and improvement tools.
You'll be surprised at the flexibility, ease of use and tremendous amount of resources available. A generous FAQ section to helps explain and guide you step-by-step through the site, presenting the information in easy-to-understand terms.
You can use the Contact Us feature to let us know what you think of the site, ask any questions you may have and join our mailing list so that we may be able to keep you informed with any updates.
As it will be updated regularly, the KaneHealthCounts.org website is meant to be used again and again. Please bookmark it. We hope you find it beneficial.

Kane County Stream Crossing Signs Now Available
Signs will be made available at no cost by the Kane County Division of Environmental & Water Resources
The Kane County Division of Environmental & Water Resources is pleased to offer new "Kane County Streams" road signs for Kane County's municipalities to install - either to replace existing damaged signs or to install at additional stream crossings without signage yet.
The signs are 18" x 24" reflective aluminum with pre-drilled holes. Signs will be issued to municipalities at no cost (sign posts and hardware not provided), and municipalities should install the "Kane County Streams" signs in coordination with their own smaller stream name signs.

Draft Fox River Corridor Plan Available for Review
Public open house to be held on November 16th
 The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) recently released a draft version of the FoxRiver Corridor Plan. The draft plan has been made available for public review and comment in advance of the formal review process with the Algonquin and Carpentersville Boards and other officials. The villages will host a public open house on Monday, November 16th, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.at the Carpentersville Public Works Building - 1075 Tamarac Drive, Carpentersville, IL 60110.
The project was initiated last year through CMAP's Local Technical Assistance program in partnership with the Villages of Algonquin and Carpentersville. The Villages are collaborating to create a corridor plan for the Fox River to increase access to the river, improve water quality, and enhance the downtown area of each community. The project area starts at approximately Klasen Road in Algonquin to the north and ends at Carpentersville's southern border.
The Fox River Corridor Plan will address the land uses that line the waterway in Algonquin and in Carpentersville. More specifically, the plan will focus on the following areas:
- Safe walking/bicycling connections between key destinations along the riverfront.
- A network of bicycle trails that will link to the regional greenway system (Fox River Trail and Prairie Trail) as well as connect cyclists to local shopping, institutions, transit, and other neighborhoods.
- Environmental features and conditions within the river and riverfront, including vegetation, park space, and water quality.
- Accessibility to the important recreational features on and along the river, including park space, bicycling, paddling, fishing, and swimming.
- A future land use plan along the riverfront within the study area that is based upon public input and the results of the existing conditions report.

Kane County Recycling Events Take a Break for Winter
Events will not be held January thru March 2016
 Kane County's Electronics and Books Recycling on the second Saturday for years, but because the event has grown so much in scale it has become logistically challenging to operate in winter. "It takes a lot more equipment and up to 30 workers to operate this event now," explains Jennifer Jarland, Kane County's Recycling Program Coordinator "and the extremely cold weather or snowy conditions presents serious issues for this scale of event." event has been once a month
Because of operational difficulties and health risks associated with operating an outdoor event in extreme weather, there will be no collection events during the winter months starting in 2016. There will be NO EVENTS in Jan, Feb, or Mar 2016. Thank you for your understanding. The events will start again as of April 9th, 2016. Events are held at the Kane County Traffic Court Building at 540 S Randall Road in St. Charles, on the following dates, between 8am and 12 noon.

Dec 12 - electronics, books, document shredding and latex paint
- Paint will have a $3.50 per gallon-can fee, payable by the resident. All else is free to drop off.
- Document Shredding is limited to 4 banker-boxes per resident, and is not for businesses to use.
 The four permanent electronics recycling drop-offs in the County's Electronics Recycling Program will remain open during their regular hours Mondays through Fridays from 8am to 3pm throughout the winter until further notice. Kane County Hosts Landscape Managers Workshop
Event co-hosted by the Conservation Foundation draws HOA representatives, landscape architects and property managers
Do you know how expensive it is to maintain turf grass? Americans spend $40 billion every year to manage their grass! Not only that, lawnmowers account for 5% of emissions every year!
The Conservation Foundation and Kane County hosted the Managing Common Areas Event on November 12th at Clarke Headquarters in St. Charles. Kane County homeowner's association representatives, landscape architects and property managers were among those who came out to learn about sustainable grass management. Guests were taken on a tour of Clarke's sustainable facility, winner of the 2015 Illinois Governor's Sustainability Award. After their tour, the Conservation Foundation talked to the guests about the different ways to manage common areas such as planting native Illinois plants, sustainable practices, and more.
